Not everyone is going to like you.
That is reality.
I have had such a hard time coming to terms with this concept. My ‘people-pleasing’ mentality cringes at the thought that not everyone will like me, my personality, and my actions.
I had this idea today that not everyone will like my art. Oddly enough, I feel at peace about it. I have my 'target audience' and my art friends that will encourage me and like my work. And if not, that is fine too!
Think about this: Not everyone likes Vincent van Gogh’s artwork. No, really, I have met people that think his work is trash. But those opinions do not define his work. People travel around the whole world to view his paintings in famous museums. And, others like myself love his paintings and find inspiration from them. This same concept or metaphor (however you want to look at it) goes for individuals too.
You may not be loved or liked by everyone you meet in life, but that does not define who you are and who you are in God’s eyes. See, the only opinion or person you should be 'people-pleasing' is God. He is the one who has made you perfectly, knows you truly, and is willing to be there for you no matter what changes in your life. God made your life, and He already knows you before you do!
So, this thought has been resonating with me today and honestly all year. Not everyone will like you, but God will always love you.
Sometimes in the lonely seasons of life, it is so freeing. Realizing that Jesus is the only one you need is where we truly become ourselves. So, as I continue to struggle with my people-pleasing mentality, because that is just my reality, I will remind myself that I do not need to worry about others who I know let me down. I need to keep focusing on God, my family, and my growth.
I pray you will challenge yourself with this idea too. I know how trapped it can feel to be in a rut of 'people-pleasing' and worrying about who will like you. This idea is not worth it, and together, we can overcome this feeling one day at a time.
Before I end this post, I wanted to share a few verses from the Bible. Scripture is full of verses on what it means to focus on God!
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” – Galatians 1:10
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men…” – Colossians 3:23
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” – Romans 8:31
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” – Psalm 139:14
