Let’s talk about motivation.
It is something we all need, yet it is something very few of us possess daily.
If you are like me, you find motivation in very few places at very odd times. One moment I can be binge-watching my favorite TV series on the couch, and the next, I am writing a ten-page paper in less than two hours. Or better yet, my motivation may come in spurts after a large cup of iced coffee.
Nevertheless, motivation (or lack thereof) comes and goes in many forms for each one of us. Deadlines may creep up on you when you least expect it, or maybe the idea of procrastinating a task drives you crazy, yet you still do not do what needs to get done. – I’ve been there, I’ve done that!
For me, being an online college student requires a lot of self-motivation. It is on me if I do not work on my assignments before they are due. It is on me if I do poorly and receive a low grade. The same concept goes for my art business; the idea of being inconsistent or not good enough lingers in my head all too often. It can all lead to self-doubt and discouragement because of my lack of motivation every day.
A factor in discouragement and a lack of motivation lies within social media. We all use social media in one form or another, and it can discourage us when we see our friends and family living seemingly perfect lives. It leads to comparison or maybe even jealousy, which ultimately leads us to feel unmotivated.
From my experiences, I have noticed that social media tends to focus on our best moments. We highlight our lives through the best captions and best selfies. We see our friends out with each other, having a good time, all while still achieving straight As. We all know at least one of those people. Do you know what we do not see? An anxious heart, discouragement, or the tears rolling down their faces. At one point or another, we have all been on both sides of social media. The “perfect one” and the “broken one”.
How can we change this persona that has been the root of our lack of motivation and self-doubt? By focusing on our PURPOSE.
I don’t know about you, but I am a detail-oriented person. I look at projects, art, and college from a narrow perspective. I see what must get done and how long it will take me to do it. I rarely remind myself of the big picture, which is to glorify God in ALL I do.
That is my purpose.
In your life, regardless of where you are or what you have or have not accomplished yet, God can use you where you are RIGHT now.
I sometimes forget that I am here for a purpose; to be a light for Christ.
I sometimes forget why I am studying in college; to pursue a degree where I can take what has been corrupted by sin, and use it for good, to glorify God.
We all have things, perfect concepts of life (social media), objects, ideas, or tasks that “get in the way” of glorifying God and finding the motivation to do so. It takes baby steps towards God’s plan, where you must allow yourself to give up control. Let God lead you on the path of His plan. God's plan is far greater than anything any of us could think of on our own.
If you let God guide you, He will give you motivation!
He knows what is best for you, and He created you for a purpose.
Today, give up control! As hard as it is, it will be worth it. Lay your worries, self-doubts, and lack of motivation in His hands.
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.” Psalm 138:8
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26
